Assistant Editor, SOM Publishing
 
Job Description:

Responsible for all editorial duties related to monthly columns and Daily Guides of Science of Mind magazine. Work with Editor-in-Chief in assessing submissions and planning contents of magazine, participate in staff and editorial meetings, assist in supervising Editorial Assistant.

Educational Requirement:
  • Four-year degree in English or Journalism
  • Religious Science practitioner

Experience and skills:

  • Experience editing magazines and/or books
  • Excellent language, writing, proofreading skills
  • Knowledge of and skill with Microsoft Word and Internet
  • Familiarity with text layout and design issues
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Team player
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Must be dedicated to teamwork, open communication, accountability, and congruence

Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific Duties for magazine:

  • Edit all regular “Columns” of Science of Mind magazine (Daily Guides, Personal Affirmations, All Together, Media Review, Louise Hay, Jesse Jennings, Kathy Hearn, Kathianne Lewis, Terry Cole-Whittaker, Margaret Stortz, Rocco Errico, Iyanla Vanzant, and Last Word)
  • Maintain working relationships with all regular columnists, to ensure timely delivery of columns and Daily Guides
  • Choose and edit excerpt for “Holmes Excerpt” feature each month
  • Choose, assemble, and edit Last Word each month
  • Coordinate with Editor-in-Chief as to solicitation and assignment of Daily Guides  assignments
  • Assign reviews for Media Review section
  • Compile list of Contributor Books information and send to DeVorss each month
  • Compile and edit Contributor Books and Links information, plus compile and edit non-published All Together letters and send to SOM website webmaster each month
  • Write book/CD reviews for Media Review, as well as write sidebars, introductions to feature articles, and other text as assigned by Editor
  • Coordinate with Editor as to breakdown of duties (as between Editor and Asst. Editor) as to: editing/line editing/copy editing/proofreading of magazine each month; review of “slush pile” submissions (both e-mail and regular mail); review of galleys/review copies of upcoming books for feature and review purposes.
  • Respond to general e-mail queries (e.g., requests for writer’s guidelines, requests for information relating to past published articles, etc.)
  • Internet research: fact-check articles, columns, check that URLs are correct, gather information to write sidebars and other text for magazine, gather information for potential articles and on potential books/CDs for review

Specific Duties for Science of Mind books

  • Edit book manuscripts
  • Copy edit/proofread manuscripts
  • Write cover copy/internal text for manuscripts
  • Write press releases for new book releases
  • Write cover letters (for book distributors and bookstores), to accompany new book releases
