| Job Description:
The Editor-in-Chief of Science of Mind Publishing is responsible for all aspects of the editorial content of Science of Mind magazine and Science of Mind books. Maintains the quality of all publishing products, being mindful of the magazine’s mission to educate readers in the Science of Mind principles in a variety of engaging ways. The Editor-in-Chief provides the magazine’s direction as a thought-provoking, comforting and inspirational tool that addresses both timeless spiritual questions and issues of contemporary life that face its audience. A key responsibility is to ensure that readers are provided with a product that they will want to continue to purchase—one that they can relate to, containing a balance of time-tested elements and forward-looking contributions discussing all aspects of New Thought spirituality. The content of the magazine and books must be in alignment with Science of Mind principles and the goal of the Global Heart Vision.
Educational Requirement:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or related field.
Experience and skills:
- Working familiarity with the principles of New Thought, the UCRS organizational model and the Global Heart Vision.
- Editorial experience in the publishing industry, including strong organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills required for working effectively with authors, designers, printers, editorial staff, and other members of publishing team.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Willingness to be flexible.
- Ability to prioritize and manage many ongoing projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan the contents of each issue of magazine, including generating feature ideas, assigning articles to authors, negotiating author agreements, reviewing outlines and drafts of features, line editing, finding new authors.
- Work with Assistant Editor to identify authors for Daily Guides, advise on columns and end matter such as All Togethers and Last Word, identify books and other materials for review, assess books for excerpt purposes.
- Organize structure and contents of each issue, including length of articles, editorial budget, collect author bios, comments and photos.
- Work closely with art director to advise on appropriate design and art, provide contacts for photographs and follow-up with art sources as required.
- Write contents page, cover heads, feature subheads, callouts, sidebars.
- Proofread proofs and bluelines.
- Assist Assistant Editor in evaluating unsolicited manuscripts, letters to editor, responding to reader and potential author inquiries.
- Prepare and disseminate annual editorial schedule.
For book publishing, evaluate manuscripts, edit and proofread galleys, work with designer to advise on layout and all elements. Work with artist/designer on cover concepts and to adhere to deadlines.
